62 years after partiton,...

Though politics never bothered me much, the turmoil in BJP lately due to the book “Jinaah: India-Partition-Independence”, authored by Jaswant Singh did compel me to think about the present political scenario of the country.

This is not the first time a book being banned in the political history of the world, but every time an incident like this happens, I strongly feel if this is the correct approach to deal with a situation in a democracy. Is this the way to secure the citizens the ‘Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship’? I myself have not read the book but if there is something which is inappropriate or erroneous, there should be a proper reply. Besides, banning of the book is just adding to its popularity. People wish to read it just to see why it is banned.

On the part of the author of the book, even if he didn’t expect his expulsion, shouldn’t he respect the decision of the party rather than considering it a ‘trap’ being laid by his ‘own party colleagues’? Doesn’t such an expression by the71 year old founding member who has served the party for a period of 30years seem to be unwise? Also, his plan to visit Pakistan for promoting the book seems to be a money making business.

I never understood the concept of being perfect or for that matter, the absolute right or wrong. I can’t say who was responsible for the partition of the country. If in India, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru are honored as true leaders and, Jinnah considered as a conspirational figure, reverse is the case in Pakistan. And, we are here witnessing the awkward predicament, the indiscipline and infighting in BJP. So, now 62 years after partition and independence, should the release of a book scatter such a big political party like BJP? The crisis in the main opposition party of the country shows how unstable we are as a nation and it is an issue of concern.
